Some Life Hacks for an Ongoing Computer Science Student

At the start of the semester, I would always tell myself that I would stay up to date with all of my courses, that I would always do assignments a couple of days before the deadline, and that I would study material beforehand. 

Yet all those well-intended resolutions are always brought to naught by, well, simply bad habits.

Ironically in CS, it's all about efficiency. You got to be efficient in studying too, do the most amount of work in the least amount of time. So spend your time wisely. One of the most important things that uni teaches you is time management.

Now the major points that I think I did wrong (and still do) over the course of four years are the following:

-Paying attention in class, this is THE most important point. The more you understand in the lecture the less you'll have to study at home.

-Never start coding from scratch, it always helps when you first plan your code on a sheet of paper (it's like trying to write an essay without an outline, you'll just end up with a crap essay)

-Don't waste your time with losers. Seriously, some acquaintances just leech you of your time and solutions for the assignments. Try to find 2-3 good friends that are also passionate about programming or have similar interests.

-Use the internet. Youtube has a plethora of instructional and very useful videos that can make up for many a missed ( or bunked) lectures.

-Get plenty of sleep. This is one of my major problems. You simply won't work right when you're tired. Sleep for at least 6-7 hrs. 

Being a computer science student is quite easy but being an industry-ready computer science student is the tough one. So what could we do?
1. Learn Programming
I have seen tons of computer science students with absolute zero knowledge of programming. But it is very important that you master at least one language. In my case, it began with C/C++ then, HTML, CSS, Python. The list is enumerating, as in the last 4-5 years the demand was different and I am forced to learn it! But I must say it's really fun!
2. Stay updated
Read blogs, attending online webinars and workshops is very important. Everybody could pass the computer science courses taught in the class, but a very few know where to put this in action and how. Also, what is the latest updates with the language you are expertise is very important.
3. Participate in Hackathons or Programming contests
Computer science is all about falling in love with machines, talking to them and making them do the kinds of stuff you want. Hackathons and contests help you to build your ideas and make you learn a hell lot of stuff you have never used before.  
4. Internship
Please don’t do internships for money and office jobs (like Excel, PowerPoint, Meeting minutes taker roles). Internships are time to learn, network and absorb things from people who are influencers in the industry. Importantly, ask smarter questions and don’t ask the same question over and over. A good internship could change your perspective towards the industry to different levels.
5. Volunteer
Never wait for the right moment to be perfect! You will never be in that stage. Volunteering with communities like PyCharm, Mozilla, OpenSource could help you to learn more and organize technical workshops. The preparations you make for the workshops itself is an enormous learning experience and you already began mastery in that domain.

4 Steps To Improve Your Life Today


To help you out in the quest of continual self-improvement I've come up with some steps, some ways, or strategies which will make staying on track easier for you. 

Frankly speaking, in order to succeed in life, you have to be consistent each and every day. So, start small but be consistent. As humans, we overestimate how much we can actually accomplish, especially when we’re in unfamiliar territory like habit change. Plans are simple and reality is complex.

See, life is never straightforward. When it gets in way People tend to get demotivated and say, "Screw It ! I don't want to do it..."

So, to avoid this to happen, here are 4 steps to improve your life today !

1. Find your "WHY ?"

Always remember, unless and until you have a strong reason to do anything in your life nobody can stop you from doing it. Find your reason to improve yourself. 

Be it, You want to those 6 pack abs on your body, You want to become a kick-ass programmer, You want to buy a house on your own, You have a great idea and you want to convert that to a successful start-up, etc.

2. Break the Norm

Let's assume you have found your WHY ?.

Now that you are clear why you want to improve your life, but you don't have a proper path, you don't know how are you going to do it. For this try different things. Figure out what are you good at. Make a note of everything you try.  Try to analyze yourself.

If you usually get up and check your phone, instead get up and relax for five minutes to start the day fresh. If you usually check your email first thing when you get to the office, instead try spending an hour working on your big task for the day first.

3. Create Something

Remember ? When you were a kid, you used to create anything you like from Scratch. Now, you’re adult. What happened ?
Paint or draw anything you want. Construct a garden. Bake a cake. Compose music. Develop an app. Write a poem or a book. Or maybe invent the time machine so we can time travel and clean humanity’s shit. Who knows ? When you create something, you explore and learn new things. It gets you out of your comfort zone. But what if you don’t have time?

Minimize social media, minimize gossips, minimize watching TV, minimize video games, and minimize unnecessary things and people from your life. 

Now you have more time.

Oh, by the way, don’t forget to share your creations. Some people might need it. And who knows, it might save their lives. And you might change the world as well.

4. Stay Curious, Be Open-Minded

Why Everyone wants to be the Best ? (Even I don't know :p)
Who's first Egg or Hen ?
Who created the World or let's say Universe ?
What if you die after you die ? :p

If I want to know something which I don't know, I google it out, Thank you so much Internet !

But, what if Google doesn't know it ? Get up, Get Out, Find those people who can help you out with your curiosities. Connect with them. Share your doubts, your fears, your what ifs.

The goal isn’t to find answers but to spark meaningful conversations. It doesn’t only help you learn and become better, also expands your circle of good friends.

Ask (the right) questions and explore different point of views. Follow your curiosities. See where it takes you.

Apart from these, you can do any of the followings,

  • Reduce sugar intake. Try your best to avoid refined sugar, opt for an optimal amount of fruits.
  • Under promise, over deliver in business, in relationships.
  • Write. Make it a habit of writing 300 to 500 words a day. It can be daily, blog post, or a Quora answer.
  • Get enough sleep. Many decide to sacrifice sleep for success, but sleep deprivation actually makes us stupid. Most people can perform even better if they were properly rested.
  • Take a deep breath. Do this every morning. And every time you feel stress and anxiety.
  • Make a to-do list. Don’t make a long list. Instead, write down only THREE most important things you need to get done today. Remember, important, not urgent.

Lastly, I would like to conclude by saying that try to get up early, meditate, exercise and be open to constructive criticisms.

Don't read this if you are not serious about your life !


You should always concentrate on yourself, No matter what !
Concentrate on ourselves means What ?
If you try thinking, How can you concentrate on improving yourself ? Then there's only one thing you can do for this which is,

1. Have a clear GOAL in your head, what exactly you want to do with your life ?

2. After that ask yourself, Am I really doing what I need to do to accomplish my GOAL ?

3. If yes, then Congrats, you are already on your way to improving yourself.

4. If No, then My friend, you have to first understand one thing. Which is You get only one life, you live only once, you have a specific amount of time, time never stops for anyone.
You have to think about the possibilities when you'll Achieve your Goals. That feeling, that sense of achievement you'll get will be awesome. You will be fearless and confident like never before !
Once you imagine yourself as having accomplished Everything you need, you want in your life, Now come to reality !
Think about the things to be done in order to be successful. In order to achieve your goals. Think about the steps to be taken.
Once this is done, get up and start !
Write down your goals, remind yourself every day when you wake Up. Tell yourself, today I'll do something for myself that'll take me to my goals, at least one step closer.
  • Make a daily routine, stick to it for at least 15 days, till the time you'll get used to it.
  • Meditate daily for at least 15 mins. No matter what, put 15 mins aside from you day to meditate. Can't you have 15 mins in a whole day For yourself ?
  • Try to do some form of exercise in the morning for at least, 30 mins at least thrice a week.
  • Eat healthy, have a balanced diet with everything containing proteins, carbs, and Fats in balance.
  • If you are doing Job, work on a side hustle. Work on your passion, your hobby, try to make some money out of it.
  • Talk with strangers, it could be anything. Just try to connect with people. Share your thoughts, your experiences with them. Try to connect with good people having some goals in their life. Try to connect with people who are more Successful than you. They will ought you to work hard to become successful like them.
  • People say, Have a guide. No ! Don't. Learn from your own experiences. That guide can guide you in a way he/she is comfortable in. Everyone is different. Everyone has different dreams, ambitions in life. So the path guided to you will not be the same to achieve YOUR goals, your dreams.
  • Have some reason, know the WHY? of your goal. Why you want to achieve this ? Do I really want anyone's suggestions, an external motivation for doing this ? Am I not motivated by myself enough to do this ?

How do I motivate myself to study


It all comes down to only one single thing.

All you need to be motivated to study is, that one single reason,
One “WHY ?”, one big reason to study hard.
You got to have that one single reason in your life to study or do anything in your life.
Right now, I can proudly say that I’m a very successful Software Engineer.
Now some of you might say what’s the big deal in it ?
Well, from a very young age I was an average child, used to score average in school. Also not so good at sports. But later on, things got changed in my life.
I did well in my +2 and got admission in an Average Engineering College. In four years of engineering, I worked so hard. I focused on continuously improving myself. Eventually, I published a patent. Presented Research Papers at International conferences. I even build an IoT museum in my college where I developed around 10 projects out of which 5 are patented.
I even got placed in 2 Big MNCs. I am the only guy in my college who is placed in two Big Companies as a Software Engineer.
Not only academics but I actively participated and managed almost all the Technical and Non-Technical events at my college.
I know for many of you this might not sound very big, but yes This is something I can proudly say about myself.

To study hard you don’t need anything. Anybody can achieve great success, It doesn’t matter if you are a genius or an average guy or a below average guy.

Think about your parentsthink about your future, think about the possibilities if you try hard now and become successful in your life. Your parents work so hard to give you everything and to give them back in return, all you need to do is study hard now, focus on your goals, focus on learning new skills every day, use your time wisely, don’t waste it on chasing girls, relationships, partying.

I am not saying that you should only focus on studies and academics. But you should learn how to connect with people. How you should identify people which are good for your development. People who also have some goals in their lives. Who ought you to think, work hard, and help you to become successful?
Speaking about relationships, don’t take them very seriously you are very young to do so. Even if you have found one. Both you first focus on your careers. First become something, become financially stable first. Unless and until you become something in your life don’t make any commitments. Help each other in building your careers.

So wrapping it up, all you want to stay motivated to study is one single reason in your life which you have to find out. Be it anything, write it down on a piece of paper and stick it somewhere you can’t take your eyes off while studying. Read it every day and remind yourself why you need to study. Do you really need anyone to motivate you for even doing this?
